The Kinabalu Park is famous the world over for the highest mountain in South-East Asia – Mt. Kinabalu, a vast, jagged granite massif rising to 4,101m. (13,455 ft). The mountain is the focal point of the whole Park, which covers an area of 754 sq km (291 sq miles) of Borneo Island in Sabeh, Malaysia and includes vegetation types ranging from the lush lowland zone through the tropical oak, rhododendron and conifer forests, to the alpine meadow plants and stunted bushes of the summit zone. The Park probably has one of the richest diversities of flora in the world.

Trek Kinabalu

Mount Kinabalu is the highest mountain in south-east Asia and offers a unique climb from tropical luxuriance through sub-alpine forests to the rocky summit plateau. The climb starts from Mount Kinabalu Park Headquarters, only a couple of hours drive but already more than 1500m above Kota Kinabalu on the coast. There is ample accommodation here, from dormitories to comfortable two-person cottages. Whilst the round-trip trek to the summit can be accomplished in two days, a more comfortable 3-day trek is recommended for biology-lovers who want to fully enjoy the rich diversity of flora on the mountain. There are 2 trails up Mt. Kinabalu. The recently-opened Mesilau Trail offers more opportunities for viewing flora and fauna, whilst the Summit Trail is the more direct route.

The use of an authorised guide is compulsory, whilst a porter is an optional luxury. Many of the trees and flowers are unique or extremely rare but to the uninitiated novice in matters botanical, there is no doubt that the pitcher plant steals the show. Even the most casual observer cannot fail to notice these impressive insect-guzzling monsters, with up to a pint of liquid in their death-by-drowning chambers, waiting to lure and then drown the passing fly or mosquito.

The summit trail winds up a steep staircase of gnarled tree-roots to a mossy world of drifting clouds and orchid-draped trees, where pitcher plants and rhododendrons abound. Just above the tree line at 3350m is a comfortable rest house where most parties spend the night. Before dawn next morning everybody is up and climbing by torchlight towards the summit. A steep rock step is aided by a fixed rope which continues all the way to the summit even where the way becomes quite flat when it winds across bare granite slabs in an eerie moonscape of rock twisted and contorted in weird wind-fashioned ways.

The early start is a good idea in order to enjoy the views before the usual mist descends on the summit, which normally happens at around 10 am. It is not a good idea to climb too quickly as the wait for the magnificent sunrise at the summit is rather cold. The arrival of daylight reveals the remarkable summit plateau of the mountain, a vast expanse of smooth rock with a weird assortment of rocky pinnacles rising from it, almost like the udders of an inverted cow. In clear weather, you can almost see all of Sabah spread out below in a magnificent soul-expanding panorama of jungle and forest, river and rock. Luckily for peak-baggers the highest pinnacle, Lows Peak, is also one of the easiest. On the way down you can take a glimpse down the dizzying depths of 1,000 meter-deep, 16 kilometer-long Lows Gully, which splits the summit plateau into the western and eastern plateaus. With the early start the descent to Park Headquarters is easily done in one day and is normally accomplished with the satisfied glow of having climbed one of the world’s most spectacular and interesting mountains.

Review of Genting Highlands free and easy vacation holiday going there by cruise and return by coach

On-Board the Super Star Virgo luxury liner

We started our getaway with a cruise on the Superstar Virgo from Singapore to Port Klang. We spent 2 days 1 night on board. We departed Singapore at 10:30pm and reached Port Klang the following afternoon at 3pm.

Our cabin was on the 11th floor without a pothole. We were surprised by the welcome gifts awaiting us on the dressing table. The room was cozy and have comfortable beds that will definitely allow you to have a beautiful night’s rest. The cabin isle is long which shows that its a long ship

The meals onboard were sumptuous. There was a choice of Western, Chinese and Mediterranean, each having a separate restaurant. We tried both the Chinese (for breakfast) tim sum style and Mediterranean (for dinner) buffet style. The breakfast was average but good enough to feel you. The dinner was better, evidenced with us going for a 2nd round to eat our fill. There are other restaurants onboard but you have to pay for them and is not included in the tour package

We toured the ship and used its facilities. Our first stop was the spa pool, hot bath and sauna. This was the first time I visited the hot bath and sauna. It was really hot and I had to open the door to let off some steam… Good thing no one was in it. hahaa. There was a theater for live performance. When there was no performance they would screen a movie. There are 13 floors in all in the ship, when you take the lift, it gives you a breath taking view of the beautiful interior. There are 2 swimming pools, one at the front and another at the rear of the ship. Last but not least we visited the casino. There were many tables for card games, roulette and others. There were many rows of slot machines too. One of the biggest casino on board a ship I have seen thus far.

Heading to Genting Highlands

We arrived Port Klang as scheduled and got off the ship to take the bus ride to Genting HighLands. The bus journey lasted 3 hours. It was like the expressway as there were no traffic lights to stop us. Along the way we got to see the majestic twin Petronas Towers at Kuala Lumpur. After a brief toilet break we started to ascend the hills of Genting HighLands. The road is not as winding as before as there are now 3 lanes going up and down. After an hour we reached the peak and proceeded to First World Hotel . It was already foggy and visibility was poor.

First World Plaza Indoor Theme Park

After dinner, we proceed to the First World Plaza Indoor Theme Park . We were amazed how a theme park could be within a building. As time was limited, we managed to ride only on the:

Genting Outdoor Theme Park

The next morning we visited the Genting Outdoor Theme Park. It rainded alittle in the morning, however it stopped. We noticed that some rides have to be paid as it is not included in the entrance fee. We took rides on the following and these are included in the entrance fee:

Out of the 13 rides, we had the most adrenalin rush from the Space Shot ride. A word of advise, only ride it with an empty stomach. We left at about 4pm to explore the hotels and casinos

Hotel exploration

We exit from the outdoor theme part main entrance. The shopping path we took connected us to all the hotels like what we have at City Link at City Hall in Singapore. First we visited the Resort Hotel. It looked like it was under some renovation. Next we walked to Genting hotel and then to Highlands hotel . Highlands hotel look the most grandeur.

Casino exploration

We visited the casinos at First World hotel and Genting hotel. We only tried our luck on the jacpot machines and not the card games. It was thrilling and exciting though we did not win anything, its more how long can our last. Haha. Btw, the air of the casinos are filled with smoke and many people tend to light up in there. After dinner we headed back to the jacpot area and later walked back to our hotel to turn in.

Going home

We left Genting at 3pm. It was a 6 hour bus ride back to Singapore. We stopped at Chong Pang Johor Bahru for a light dinner. On the way I noticed that street lamps only appeared when there is a major junction and the rest of the way was mostly dark. Our coach returned by the second link through the Tuas immigration check point which was much faster. We returned home with fond memories of our trip and had the feeling of wanting to stay there longer and not return

Borneo ? Sun Sea and Orangutans

When my wife and I were deciding where to go on our honeymoon, we knew one thing, we wanted to go to Penang in Malaysia, to celebrate with relatives out there, but we knew we wanted to then move on to somewhere else after that, the only thing was where?

The Caribbean or Africa was a no go as the price to fly half way around the world and then back round again would have been monumental. Also the weather was a bit of a problem too. We tied the knot in early September, which ruled out the Maldives, Tahiti and Bali due to monsoon and rainy seasons.

We had been to Thailand the year before so decided we wanted to try somewhere else. We eventually chose to stay in Malaysia, but more precisely, Sabah in Borneo.

Well known for beautiful beaches and tiny islands great for diving, Sabah is also well known for orangutans, and has a world famous orangutan rehabilitation reserve at Sepilok, a short flight from our hotel at Kota Kinabalu.

However, we discovered that the hotel we chose had a nature reserve within the hotel grounds that was affiliated with Sepilok, and took in baby orphaned Orangutans, preparing them for their next stage at Sepilok before eventually being released back into the wild.

The Shangri-La Rasa Ria resort is situated on Pantai Dalit Beach, a beautiful stretch of beach that is sheltered and exclusive to the resort. The hotel was fantastic, and deciding to treat ourselves to a stay in the Ocean Wing, the exclusive wing with its own private pool, breakfast and luxury rooms with sea views and giant soak tub on the balcony, was well worth the extra money.

The hotel had a great choice of restaurants, and deciding to go half-board was a good option. Half-board entitles you to breakfast and dinner at the Coffee Terrace restaurant, or 100RM (about 17 quid) per person towards a meal in one of the other restaurants. This allowance pretty much covered the full cost of a meal in the other restaurants, except for the gourmet Coast restaurant which really is fijne dining at its best.

The culinary highlights for us were dinner at Naan and Tepi Laut ‘Makan Street’.

Naan was, funnily enough, and Indian restaurant and this award winning restaurant served some of the best Indian food I have ever had, food which went perfectly with the Malaysian local brew, Tiger Beer!

Tepi Laut ‘Makan Street’ was a typical Malaysian style food court, offering all the tastes that make Malaysian cuisine so special, with dishes from China, India, Sri Lanka and Indonesia. Each station offered something different, and the vegetable station featured baskets of uncooked Chinese vegetables and sauces where people could put what they wanted on a plate with the sauces of their choice. The chef would then quickly stir fry these while you wait.

Our favourite was the kangkong belacan, what is basically ung choi fried in garlic and sambal (a fiery hot shrimp paste) with some red chillies – very hot but very tasty.

The real highlight for us was the orangutans. Each day, guests can make a donation to the reserve and trek a short way into the jungle to a pair of viewing platforms to watch the baby orangutans feed. The experience is quite simply amazing.

They are extremely cute and very agile. Some shy, others mischievous it is fantastic to watch their playful antics. We went twice to see them, the first time I filled my camera’s memory card of around 500 photos well before the hour came to an end and was frantically having to delete bad shots in order to take more.

Upon arrival in the main town of Tana Rata, several touts from surrounding guest-houses are there to greet you vying for your business. Kang Travellers Lodge is a great choice and once settled in, one has to check out the towns many cafes and restaurants. Sitting down with a book and drinking tea and dipping scones are a welcome change from the hustle and bustle of most of Malaysia.

Dinner offers plenty of opportunities, but make sure not to miss out on the Steamboat dinners at one of the many restaurants offering them. The thinly sliced meat with vegetables and noodles cooked in a simmering pot at your table gives a welcome warmth to the cool highland evening.

It is the hiking and the jungle that brings one to the Cameron Highlands however, so make sure to grab a map and set out for one of the many trails in the area. A must do trail is Gunung Brinchang. It is the highest peak in Malaysia and starts from Sungai Palas. The 1-hour hike through the jungle trail takes you to a summit that offers
spectacular panoramic views. Clouds sweep in and out over the mountains
changing the scenery with each passing second.

Once you have soaked in the sights, a gentle walk down the road takes you past the Sungai Palas tea estate, offering beautiful photo opportunities. Deep green lines are etched into the mountains wheremillions of tea plants neatly planted in rows and patterns. Catching a ride back to town is easy. Friendly people will offer a seat in the
back of their truck and you can stop for fresh fruit en route.

Several other trails can be explored as well, there are 14 in all. They take you to the beautiful Robinson Falls, Parit Falls, to a Buddhist Temple and around the Cameron Highlands Golf course. It is truly getting back to nature when one visits The Cameron Highlands in Malaysia.

Kapalai accesses the best diving spots in Sabah Borneo, which makes it the best hotel in Sabah if you want to dive. From here you can dive in Sipadan where you will find big fish and turtles. You can go muck diving at Mabul, or stay close to Kapalai itself.

The Sipadan-Kapalai Island Resort, whilst geared towards divers is also a wonderful escape from the pressures of the 21st century. The rooms are a bit like the Maldives were a few years ago, and as an added bonus they are a fraction of the price, and at no time to you feel crowded on this very special hotel in Sabah.

The food is good, very varied, and served buffet style, plus there is a lot of it, and is served almost 24 hours every day.

You can dive five times a day and never go to the same place twice, but of course Kapalai Island resort is one of the world’s top diving destinations. Everyone at Sipadan is very helpful, and you will get exceptional service from all of the staff from the divemasters to the hotel staff.

It’s 2:00 am, summit day and I am exhausted and exhilarated at the same time. I am going to climb my first mountain this morning. Mount Kinabalu in Sabah, Borneo. At 4095 meters it is South East Asia’s highest peak.

Mount Kinabalu is a 2-hour bus ride from Kota Kinabalu, the capital of Malaysian Borneo’s northern province. My husband Dave and I have come to this island to experience adventure. We have already spent time in the Jungle at Uncle Tan’s Safari Lodge watching the proboscis monkey, monitor lizards, civet cats and many other creatures exist by the river in their natural habitat. We have witnessed human nature at its greatest, helping orphaned and injured Orangutans at the Sepilok Rehabilitation Centre and we have relaxed on the beach by the Sulu Sea. It is now time to see what we are made of at our final stop in this exotic destination.

As we ride along the winding mountain road, Mount Kinabalu comes into view and it is an intimidating sight. Its impressive granite peak juts out of the jungle casting a shadow over the land. My heart races just a bit faster and a fear creeps into my mind as we are let off at the parks entrance.

We haul our packs onto our backs and walk towards the headquarters where a guard meets us and we pay our RM15 ( CAD) park entrance fee and book a room for the night. We are climbing tomorrow and within minutes, we secure our permit, guide and accommodations on the mountain for RM300 (0 CAD) each. Excited and relieved to be able to climb so quickly, we head to our dorm room where we begin to organize ourselves. Deciding to pack light for this 2-day expedition, we leave behind our large rucksacks and fill a day-pack with only the essentials. Chocolate bars, cookies, cheese and water for energy, layers of warm clothing, camera,video, journal and hiking shoes is all we need. While buying a few toiletries at the canteen, we even manage to snag some warm hats and mittens from other travelers who have just returned from their climb. By the time we settle in for the evening, we have scaled down our loads and we feel well prepared for task ahead.

The first day of our climb starts at 7:00 am where we hop into a mini van for the 5km shuttle to the start of the trail. After signing in, our guide Japly sets a strong pace and for the next 5-hours it is a steep and grueling climb. At first the trail has steps and handrails built into it, but as we gain altitude, it becomes rocky and turns into a narrow, nearly vertical path. Porters put us to shame walking briskly in their flip flops carrying large barrels, loads of wood and even piles of steal strapped to their backs and balanced on their heads.

After struggling for hours and wondering if the pain will ever end, we finally reach our camp by early afternoon. At 3263 metres, Laban Rata has our dorm rooms and hot showers. The sun is shining brightly above the clouds and we lay our sweat soaked clothing on the rock to dry as we munch on our snacks and bask in the warmth.

Dinner at sunset is breathtaking. A blazing light show fills the sky with fiery colours, above the pink clouds pillowed below. The celebration doesn’t last long however, as we must turn in early for our 2:00 am wake-up call.

The night passes slowly and my sleep is fitful. Having to brave the cold a couple of times for a visit to the toilet, it seems that I will never rest. I am too nervous with anticipation for our summit push. 2:00 am comes all to quickly though and just as it seems that I am finally falling asleep, it is time to awake. Quickly dressing in our
layers, we head up to meet Japly, who will guide us through the darkness.

The air is thin and it is difficult to catch my breath. The pace seems fast and I wonder if I will make it. Luckily, we come to a bottleneck of other climbers and our pace slows and my heart has a chance to relax. Soon I feel in the zone and keep a steady pace along with our group. We climb for 2 1/ 2 hours walking on steep sheer granite keeping our balance while holding on to rope bolted into the rock. I cannot not see the sheer drops below or the daunting summit above. I am simply forced to focus on my climb putting one foot in front of another following the line of people up to the summit.

By 5:15 am we have made it safely. The excitement and emotion is overwhelming and we joyously celebrate, until we realize that we have to wait in the freezing cold for another hour until sunrise. It is the longest 60 minutes of my life. I am wet, cold and soon my fingers and toes go numb. I want to sleep, and I want to be down the mountain, relaxing in a comfortable bed.

Instead, we perch ourselves on the edge of a rock facing the sunrise where we wait. And wait. The first few rays finally burst into the sky and as it rises, our bodies warm and we take in the magnificent view. The sight is worth the wait as we overlook the vast jungle and into the surrounding mountains feeling emotional and proud of our
accomplishment.

Redang is a very popular tourist spot. It a 7 kilometers longs and 6 kilometers wide which makes it one of the largest island in the east coast of Malaysia. It is situated about 45 kilometers offshore from Terengganu. The archipelago of Redang consists of 9 islands, which are:-

Paku Kecil Island,

Ekor Tebu Island,

Pinang Island

Ling Island, and

Redang Island.

The archipelago has been generously endowed by nature with exceptionally beautiful marine fishes, coral reefs, and turtles. It is home to about 500 species of living corals, over 3,000 species of fishes, including the likes of stingrays, manta rays, sharks, as well as whale sharks. Redang along with the other islands forms a marine park which offers facilities for memorable diving and snorkeling experiences. The white sandy beaches giving way to crystal clear waters makes for an exceptional sight. And as if that was not all, this area is also the sight of two shipwrecks. The ships H.M.S Repulse and H.M.S. Prince of Wales sunk in this area during World War 2. These two shipwrecks attract even those people who are normally not interested in diving and of courses coupled with the rest of the attractions the area has become a haven for divers. Scuba diving is also very popular because of the crystal clear waters, which allow one to observe the exotic marine life of the area in their natural habitats. One can also indulge in other recreational activities like sea kayaks and beach volleyball. The government has however banned water skiing and jet skiing because they would be damaging to the corals.

Redang Island has many well maintained resorts which offer visitors a wide range of facilities. Many of them also offer snorkeling tours to neighboring islands. There over 20 sites for diving enthusiasts. Pasir Panjang has got some good reefs. It also has a small island which serves as the nesting area for baby sharks. Another interesting site is the Terumbu Kili which is a submerged chamber having uneven terrain caves.

Redang has a tropical climate with the temperature hovering around 30ºC. The best time to visit this area is between April to October. It experiences monsoon between November and March. Most of the resorts are shut down during this period and even the ferry services are extremely restricted.
